Hugo Lonitz, German Majolica                      Updated: 03/09/12

From 1860, Hugo Lonitz & Co. of Neuhaldensleben, Germany were producing luxury and utilitarian majolica of a very high standard.

The wares were exhibited alongside the important English Minton, and George Jones makers at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876; Works of Art Exhibition in Leipzig in 1879; and at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880.

In 1885, they advertised their products as - Palissy-Majolica artistic and useful objects, animal heads and statuettes, especially in imitation of bronzes.  They were awarded an order of merit at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880.

  Traditional Marks
Most Lonitz pieces are marked with an "Oval" containing the double fish as pictured below.  The number represents a production code for the object or a Lonitz model number.
